Bespoke Kitchen Project in Colchester
London Road Project
Set within a beautiful period property in Colchester, the London Road Kitchen project was all about creating a space that blended classic design with personal charm. With both children having left home, our clients decided it was the perfect time to update their kitchen and create something tailored to their lifestyle.
The brief was clear: to design and build a bespoke handmade kitchen that respected the traditional character of the home while introducing thoughtful, modern touches.
A Timeless Shaker Kitchen
For the cabinetry, we chose a classic Shaker-style design – a natural choice for a period property where simplicity, proportion and craftsmanship are particularly important.
The understated detailing gives the furniture a timeless quality, allowing it to complement the existing architecture rather than compete with it.
Every cabinet was individually made and carefully fitted within the room, ensuring that the new kitchen works harmoniously with the property's existing features and proportions.
Although compact, the layout was carefully considered to make the most of every available area, providing practical storage and an efficient working environment without compromising the room's sense of space.
Glazed Cabinets with Integrated Lighting
To add personality to the traditional cabinetry, we introduced glazed wall cabinets with integrated internal lighting.
These provide an opportunity to display treasured possessions and decorative pieces, bringing a more personal element to the kitchen. The subtle lighting also adds warmth to the room, particularly in the evening, creating an atmosphere that feels welcoming rather than purely functional.
It is these smaller, considered details that help transform a fitted kitchen into a space that feels genuinely personal to its owners.
Natural Oak Shelving
Floating oak shelves were incorporated to introduce a contrasting natural material to the Shaker cabinetry.
The warmth and texture of the oak soften the overall scheme and bring an organic quality to the room. They also provide useful additional display space while helping to create a more relaxed, lived-in feel.
The combination of painted cabinetry, natural oak and softly illuminated glazed cupboards creates a carefully balanced palette – traditional enough to suit the period property, but fresh and contemporary enough for modern living.
Handmade Furniture, Carefully Fitted
As with every Chapel Lane Furniture project, the cabinetry was designed and handmade specifically for the space.
Working within an existing period property requires careful consideration of proportions, architectural details and the character of the building. Each element was fitted with precision to create a seamless result that feels as though it has always belonged there.
The attention to detail extends beyond the visible furniture, ensuring that the kitchen is as practical and functional as it is beautiful.
The Result
The completed London Road kitchen is a compact but highly functional space, full of warmth, character and individuality.
The classic Shaker cabinetry respects the period setting, while glazed display cupboards, integrated lighting and natural oak shelving introduce more personal and contemporary touches.
The result is a kitchen that feels both familiar and refreshed – a beautifully crafted space designed specifically around the clients' lifestyle and the next chapter of their home.
